How to Choose the Right Bird Net for Your Farm
Bird netting is one of the most widely used crop protection tools in agriculture. However, not all bird nets are the same. Mesh pattern, GSM, width, and installation method all affect how well the net performs in your specific environment. This guide walks you through the key factors to consider.
Step 1: Identify Your Crop Type
Different crops have different structural layouts, which affect the type of bird net and installation method you need.
- Vineyard: side netting or over-row systems, typically 4–6 meters wide
- Orchard (apple, cherry, blueberry): full canopy or individual row systems
- Open field crops: lightweight nets for seasonal deployment
Step 2: Choose the Mesh Pattern
For vineyards and most orchards, you have two main options: hex (hexagonal) or diamond mesh. Hex is more stable and suited to mechanical installation. Diamond is more flexible and better for manual side netting.
Step 3: Select the Right GSM
GSM (grams per square meter) reflects the weight and density of the net. Heavier nets are more durable but also heavier to handle. For most bird net applications, 40–70 gsm is the standard range.
Step 4: Define the Width and Length
Bird nets are available in widths up to 23 meters. Choose the width based on your row spacing and installation system. Length should be customized to your row length to minimize joins.
Step 5: Consider Installation Method
The installation method — over-row, side netting, or full canopy overhead — affects which net specification is most appropriate. Consult with your netting supplier to confirm the right spec for your system.
